I was once told the story of a polar bear who turned into a bird and flew away. The bear was teaching the hunter a lesson about honor and faith. As I paint, I have learned to disregard the reality that we automatically see, and rather paint what is truly there. Often, it doesn’t make sense and there are times when there is only light, and not a figure at all. And while the painting eventually morphs into a familiar form, when you have the opportunity to really study something, you can find the truth in the story of the bear that flew away. There is a realm of greater possibilities hiding like a secret within the layers of paint.

Ashley Kane is a formally trained artist influenced by her Inupiaq Eskimo heritage. She received her B.A. in Art and a Masters in Art Education from the University of Nevada. While studying in Greece, she earned a Certificate of Completion for graduate studies from Hellenic International Studies in the Arts. Kane’s group exhibitions include Like, Love, Lust: A Secret Show at the Nevada Museum of Art, as well as Art from the Underworld at Holland Tunnel in Parikia, Greece. She has earned awards from the National Arts Program, CIRI Foundation, and the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Services.
